# Use OuterProduct with coding agents

> Install and update the OuterProduct skill for Codex or Claude Code.

The OuterProduct skill directs your coding agent to the current Python API documentation.
Install it once for your user account and use it across projects on the same machine.

You need the [OuterProduct CLI](https://docs.outerproduct.com/outerproduct-cli.md) and Codex or Claude Code
installed separately. Managing skills requires no OuterProduct login or API key.

## Install and verify the skill

Choose the agent you use, or install for both:

```shellscript Codex theme={null}
op skill install --codex --user
op skill list
```

```shellscript Claude Code theme={null}
op skill install --claude --user
op skill list
```

```shellscript Both theme={null}
op skill install --codex --claude --user
op skill list
```

Confirm the installation when prompted. `op skill install` downloads the skill of the latest OuterProduct release. To install a specific release instead, pass its version, such as `op skill install 0.9.4 --claude --user`.

`op skill show` prints the `SKILL.md` bundled with your CLI. `op skill list` lists the latest release's skills and where each is installed.

The locations are `~/.agents/skills/outerproduct` for Codex and
`~/.claude/skills/outerproduct` for Claude Code. If you use a custom
[`CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR`](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/env-vars), set the same value
in the terminal running `op`; it installs under that directory's `skills/outerproduct`.

## Use it in your agent

Open your project in your coding agent. Enter these prompts in the agent's chat:

> [tab] Codex
>
> In [Codex CLI or the IDE extension](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/build-skills),
> type `$` and select `outerproduct`, or use `/skills` to find it. Try:
>
> ```text wrap theme={null}
> $outerproduct Check this project's Python API version, then write a minimal remote Python function. Do not run it yet.
> ```

> [tab] Claude Code
>
> In [Claude Code](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/skills), invoke the skill with
> `/outerproduct`. Try:
>
> ```text wrap theme={null}
> /outerproduct Check this project's Python API version, then write a minimal remote Python function. Do not run it yet.
> ```

If the skill is not visible, restart the agent's session. Agents can also select
it automatically when you ask about OuterProduct. For example: "Use the OuterProduct skill to parallelize this function across GPUs. Explain the resource requirements before running anything."

The skill's target Python API version may differ from your project's pinned version.
Ask the agent to check compatibility; installing or updating skills does not
upgrade your Python API.

The CLI, Python API, and skill share one release version. `op skill install` fetches the latest release's skill, so you don't need to update the CLI to get a newer skill.

## Update

To refresh installed skills, choose the agents you previously installed for:

```shellscript Codex theme={null}
op skill install --codex --user
```

```shellscript Claude Code theme={null}
op skill install --claude --user
```

```shellscript Both theme={null}
op skill install --codex --claude --user
```

To update `op` itself, refer to [OuterProduct CLI](https://docs.outerproduct.com/outerproduct-cli.md). Updating the CLI does not refresh installed skills; run `op skill install` with your agent flags and `--user` as above.

## Uninstall

```shellscript Codex theme={null}
op skill uninstall --codex
```

```shellscript "Claude Code" theme={null}
op skill uninstall --claude
```

```shellscript Both theme={null}
op skill uninstall --codex --claude
```

This removes only the selected agents' OuterProduct skill installations.

Install, update, and uninstall prompt for confirmation when they would change
files. Add `--yes` to skip confirmation in scripts. Update and uninstall replace
or remove the whole skill directory, including any edits you made there.
